Source of Natural Colorants for Hand Block Prints

Introduction
Using natural and vegetables colors for dying fabrics and other materials is one of the dates back arts in India. Carrying out tests of fruit and vegetable colors has come as better results into hand block print art. Later many different colors were made using chemical elements but it came as harmful results in diseases like skin problem, itching, and infection etc.  So in the recent time in India, the experts are working to produce eco-friendly colorants and experimenting with various natural sources.
Most of the natural sources are produced from plants and fruits (leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, bark, roots, berries etc).  In addition, there are lots of basic origins colorants are extracted from-

Indigo Blue
Indigo is the most popular dye of ancient’s time implemented to color a variety of fabric materials. It is extracted from the leaves of Indigo Ferra Tinctoria. Some fabrics like silk, cotton, and wool can be colored using Indigo blue. Likewise, it is implemented in hand block printing to stamp designs onto women clothing accessories moderately such as scarves, dupattas, and kurtas etc.
Kamala Pigment
This beautiful color is extorted from the flower of Kamala plant. This pigment is good for dying silk and wool fabrics. Leaving yellow shades, it produces brightness to the outfits.
Manju Fruit
It is also used for coloring silk and wool materials. It produces gray-cream color shades with the amalgamation of iron and alum. Mostly, this dye is used to create golden prints onto light and shade fabrics.
Madder
In the historic time, Madder was used in Egypt.  Madder (Rubia Cardifolia) is a good source of dye, commonly produces colorants like pink, red and orange. Moreover, Madder contains about 20 compounds of colors. Red and purple colors in the chemical blends construct a good range of natural colorants.
Alizarin
Alizarin is extracted from the roots of Indian Madder. It also produces multiple color shades as Madder gives. It contains red, pink and purple with better dying fastness. Alizarin printing is known as the most used technique in hand block printing. Red and maroon both are basic natural colors implemented as essential rudiments in hand block printing.
Wrapping Up
Indian textile industries deal with a massive expertise in producing the technologies of natural colorants production.  From the ancient time, India has been revealing the working knowledge of pigmentation across the world. In the recent time, we have found diverse shades using natural sources and now implementing those for coloring cotton, silk, and wool fabrics.

Jovial Spirit-an outfit for today’s woman!!

Where the women today are pursuing higher education, becoming doctors, lawyers, CEO’s and proving themselves better and efficient than man in every field, there is one field left which still has clear dominance of men, the field of harassment. Yes, in the wake of the recent #me too movement, I designed this outfit.

Where the women today are pursuing higher education, becoming doctors, lawyers, CEO’s and proving themselves better and efficient than man in every field, there is one field left which still has clear dominance of men, the field of harassment. Yes, in the wake of the recent #me too movement, I designed this outfit.

Don't judge me but honestly, in the agitation of the sexual harassment stories going on the media, I worked on the color scheme of this liner suit pattern. I choose its color in contrast because I wanted to show two sides of women. With white I tried to reflect the cleanliness and purity of women’s character and the idea behind maroon is to show immense strength, courage, ambition, and confidence to break those who mess with us. There are peace and love but there is an anger of revenge too.

Not leaving behind the festive purpose of this suit, I added on the raffles as the border of the dupatta and made tassels for the right side of the kurta. While the raffles accentuate the fullness of body and presence of your personality, the tassel will sway gracefully with every movement of yours. The tassels are handmade with the leftover fabric of maroon kurta and white embroidered flowers on it.

The same embroidered flowers are also placed around the V neck to decorate it a bit. Rest all the attention-grabbing or amplifying effect is carved out from the golden prints on the dupatta and palazzos. The golden color is not just considered as royal and auspicious but also reflects positive energy. These prints on dupatta and palazzos render a complete look to the plain maroon kurta.

The fabrics used for Jovial Spirit are cotton and flax. These are very soft, comfortable and easy to wash materials. Order this outfit and look exceptionally exquisite on this Diwali. The Palazzo will add to your extravagant and trendy approach in dressing. In all these suits is going to make jaws dropped. Pair it with nice juttis and silver jhumkas and go for minimal makeup to get genuine compliments.

Remember, the colours you wear speak a lot about you and this Diwali, let your outfit shout for you that you are beautiful beyond description and powerful beyond measure.

Love,
Jyoti <3

Why should foreigners buy hand block printed clothes of Rajasthan?

“To other countries, I may go as a tourist but to India, I come as a pilgrim” This I have heard not from one but from many foreigners who love India and visit it often. With a population of 1.2 billion people, a plethora of languages, religions, dance forms, art, food, customs and so much, this country is indeed a fascinating land. It is not just the best place to visit and experience diversity but also a paradise for shopping. There is so much incredible produced or made in India that literally foreigners get confused, what to pick and what to leave. Well, solving this confusion a bit here is one suggestion for tourists to India. Do buy handblock printed fabric of Rajasthan and my reasons for this are as follows:

Ancient: There has been archaeological evidence about the existence of the basic form of block printing from 3000 BCE, the era of the Indus Valley Civilisation. This traditional art went through its own evolution cycle until or unless the kings of the 12th century gave it a royal patronage. Currently, it is practiced in states like West Bengal, Gujarat, and Rajasthan but the state which is popular for the authentic form of it is Rajasthan. The artisans which are practicing this art from their generations reside in Bagru, a small village in the Rajasthan and precisely print every single fabric by their hands.

Creative and Colourful: With a beautiful amalgamation of colors and prints influenced by varied cultures of the world, this art is indeed exclusive and outstanding. Generally, block printing is done on a white or pastel background where there are separate blocks for each color. The outlines are made first and then the bright colors like indigo, orange, yellow, green, red etc are filled in. The patterns are bold and printed repeatedly in rows. Trust me, the melange of flowers, buds, leaves, and various other contemporary prints looks beautiful in symmetry with bright colors popping out on a light base.

Labor intensive: In this age of machines, where tons of fabric gets ready in just no time, the hand block printed fabric is created with all care and hard work of many days. It is an artisan produced textile and guess this factor alone makes it really attractive. If you happen to visit Rajasthan, do have a look at the variety of these hand block printed clothes, you will see an apparent human touch with fascinating little imperfections that cannot be replicated by machines.

Unique and Inexpensive: Variety of hand block printed apparels like saree, dresses, kurta, scarfs, suits etc are available in India at reasonable prices. It’s not that you can't get it anywhere else but since it is originally manufactured here and gets exported; its prices shoot up in another land after being imported there. More, it is a unique art form of India which must be bought from its native land only.

Eco-friendly: Last but not the least; I feel this art is a cumulative celebration of ecological, integrity, plants, nature and people closely involved in each step. The prints are beautiful renditions of plants, animals and human culture, the human hands work in place of machines and the colors are naturally prepared from vegetables and flowers. Indeed this Eco-friendly art deserves appreciation and recognition from all around.
